This weekend I spent a lot of time measuring the cam lobe-to-valve shim clearance and made sure all the timing marks lined up before disassembling the front of the engine...

I was happy to see that all of the shims fell within specs so I proceeded and took the timing belt and water pump off (to have rebuilt by Dick Jordan) and cleaned everything...

I had help from a fellow FChatter who's done this before and really helped me understand this procedure.

    Hi Troy,

That's great... I hope others will follow suit as well... I would look to the US for great deals on 348s...

I will be buying it in the US for sure. By the way, the fellow you bought your car from seemed really honest and up-front about the car. The reason he gave you for selling was the same he gave me.

It's interesting - you bought the car for a low price and because restoration is needed you automatically get a free ferrari 348 mechanics certificate by necessity(saving you huge $$$ in future service). Not only that - at the end of your life this will have been your 'Ferrari Story'. Value!

    Thanks again,

    Troy

    Flywheel/Clutch back in clutch housing...

Since I didn't have any torque values for the flywheel assembly, I went with 30ft/lb and added a little loctite for good measure.

Ok, as much as I liked the look of the headers the way they came from the factory... one thing I failed to mention, partly cuz I thought I would be able to get them out, is that the media they used to blast the headers clean got into the heat shield and were rolling around in there... hundreds of these ceramic beads were caught within the shields so I had no choice but to remove them. What I found out was that there is insulation and that's what prevented the beads from rolling out of the opening. Fortunately, the shop who cerakromed them will re-do them for free... I was afraid those little beads would become red hot and burn through the headers.

I might have to make a heat shield of some sort for the alternator and A/C compressor...

Also, I asked the question as to why they don't coat the insides of the exhaust tubes and I was told that because they cannot blast the tubes completely, the coating may not stay and since it peels off in strips, could clog the cats and/or mufflers...

Thanks... I'm in the home stretch now... my order from Ricambi came in this aft. so I should have the necessary parts to button up the gearbox/engine/suspension so I should start assembling all these items in the subframe very soon... not giving up, my self-imposed deadline is 2 months away...

Watch for a lot more pics in the coming weeks...

    Hey All,

I am sure most of you have heard the horror stories from Daniel at Ricambi where one of the fences on the cam drive gear (incidentally the rear fence) let go and followed his cam belt through his cam gears and effectively grenaded his engine. Well sure enough, when I checked my drive gear, the rear fence was loose so I ordered the Hill ring nut tool to remove the gear and have those fences welded... glad I caught that one!!!! This is definitely something to look at while performing the engine out procedure.

Here are some before and after pics...

You can see the repairs around the fill hole... every time I tried to grind flush, I would open up pinholes... I finally left it as is and decided to throw into the pile going for powder coating. I bought the tank sealing kit from the POR-15 company and will give it a try. I had a custom aluminum tank made and although it's quite nice, I opted to keep the stock look... if it ends up leaking, I'll switch to the custom tank.
