garage lifts in GTA

I'm entertaining the idea of getting a lift installed in my tight 2 car garage...can anyone recommend a company where I can get a quote ?

Jason,
The one from Carlift.ca is a good lift. Same as 90% of the lifts being sold in Toronto (same Chinese manufacturing facility). Carlift.ca has good prices as well. I think they have a pick-up facility in Mississauga if you have a car trailer (or other long trailer) to save the shipping costs.

I first want to modify my garage doors to open straight up increasing garage height to 13'
The doors only open to 7' now. Why would they mount the things so low?

Doing on the recession budget. Any tips for the door mods?

 

I have one close up pic of the set-up I did for my garage door on the link above. You need to order new rails, longer aircraft cable and a larger cable pulley for the spring bar. The torsion spring needs to be adjusted as well. I got my rails from my supplier but they don't sell to the public. You can try buying it from a garage door company. You have to get a extension bar for your garage door opener as well (i made mine from 1" flat stock steel).
Should be pretty inexpensive to do. It cost me around $300 for that modification.

I'm adding a lift too. Thinking about the ones from carlift.ca.

I'm going to change out the garage doors for insulated ones and I'm hoping they'll throw in the raising work for free.

I have a concern about chinese manufactured lifts.
I know they are cheap to purchase but your life or your car or both are dependant on the quality of the lift.
I remember reading about numerous chinese lift collapses a few years ago.

This reminds me of a old motorcycle helmet ad. 'if your head is worth $10.00, then buy a $10.00 helmet, otherwise consider bell helmets"

What standards are applied to lifts made in China?
I purchased a lift made in Texas by a US manfucaturing company and lifts made in the USA are subject to safety standards that are second to none.
Contact the Mustang Store in pickering....they can sell you either a USA lift (or a chinese lift if you wish).

 

I got mine from Joe at Dasilva racing, mustangtoystore is his company as well. Good price and a quick install. Not made in china either.

Regarding the safety on the lifts you should know that most "hobby/residential lifts" made in the US are not CSA or ANSI approved either. You have to by a commercial lift for that. There are some Chinese lifts that are CSA approved for commercial use. That said, the Chinese lifts may not necessarily be of less quality than a lift from the US.
A rule of thumb, if you paid under $4000 for your lift (supply only, not installation), it is made in China.
A four post lift has the weight distributed over four points equally (more or less). Say a car that is 4000lbs has a weight of 1000lbs on each post. Each post has a 3/4" x 3/4" x 2" safety lock tab with a 4mm weld (along the 2" side) on each side attaching it to the post. If 25% of the weld is good it will hold 2000lbs in shear strength easily.On top of that it still has the aircraft cable if one of the locks did come loose.
So considering that, I'm not concerned with the safety of my lift at all.
I bet even the guys claiming to have US/Canada made lifts have the components made in China anyways. The materials alone would cost you $2000 to make a lift in Canada (not including fabrication and overhead costs).
My 2 cents, the Chinese lifts are perfectly fine for hobby use.

you make some good points Roc..though I'm still divided on the topic ? Yes for 'hobby'use they might be fine but over the years and repeated wear & tear I doubt they will last up to the US made models...cheaper plastic parts is one thing but when youre talking about steel???ahh not so sure..I like to know that structural welds were done by qualified licensed welders..not to mention the quality makeup of the steel itself

 

Bell Helmet is made in China too ! lol - that was why I bought a Sparco Helmet 2 years ago but it was eventually made in China too...

 

My fricken shower curtian is made in china, everything is made in china! I debated going on a mission and only buying products that are not made in china but it would be difficult. My hoist? Joe says its made in the USA, I cant argue it. As a mechanic that uses hoists everyday I can say my hobby hoist looks more than strong enough for the task. Its pretty fool proof when you look at the design even if the welds are done by some kid it wont drop my car from 6 feet high to the floor in the blink of an eye.

 

Got mine at Clifford Underwood in Montreal, Chinese made with a USA hydraulic unit. Quality is fine for a 2600 lb car. 3/4" safety pins are always in place, not concerned at all. I did consider carlift.ca but Clifford Underwood installed also and I was not comfortable doing it myself and taking the resposibility should anything go wrong. I did go for the XL version seeing that I'm parking a Cayenne underneath.
