More here: http://www.classicdriver.com/uk/magazine/3100.asp?id=12618 Rear and profile views aren't bad, but the front end is very Taurus-like, imo. Doesn't really matter what I think, though, because I wouldn't buy one regardless of how good it might look. i don't see where all the hate is coming from. that profile view looks quite enticing to me ('cuz it looks like a maranello!). my beef with it is that it looks like a DB9 not like a jag. doody.
I think the front needs to be reworked. Maybe make the grill a little lower on the car and little different so it looks a little less taurusesque. And from certain angles the rear looks like it is sitting high but the current XK looked like it was sitting high too but now I really like it so I think this one will grow on me when I see it in person.
I saw the concept version of this car on the SPike Automobile awards show or whatever it was called a few months ago. I immediately thought it was an Aston Martin ripoff. I didn't think Jag would be able to make it look even more like the DB9 and get away with it. That really makes me angry.
Poor man's AM. As an AM owner I am offended that Ford would so blatantly copy the DB9. FWIW I bought my wife an 02 XK8 convertible for her 40th B-Day "I'm so happy, I love this car and will keep it for the rest of my life............." Two years later......... We sold that POS on an SL 500. "There's no comparison between the Mercedes and that tin can."
Wow - frightening! Nice post. Winner: Ferrari, hands down. But the 550/575 are gorgeous enough to copy, I s'pose.
While that's always popular to say on a site like this, I would have to come down on the other side. I think it makes the Maranello look too upright and old school when you put them side by side. I also think the rear haunches look less contrived on the Jag than on the 550. I always felt the 550 didn't have enough length to do the rear arc they chose, so I looked past it, but I can't criticise the Jag's. The front would look better without that bar probably, but the rear looks better than I feared from other pics. I love what they've done with the interior. No it certainly doesn't break new ground, but I like the departure from the previous style, which I will probably buy someday when I can figure out how to get it into the fleet. As an XJS owner it took a long time for me to desire an XK8, but I like this car a lot faster right off the bat. I certainly wish them well.
The slanted vents and artful door handles on the 550 add some drama. They look like add-ons on the new XK8. I'll hold final comment till I see one in the metal. We may also be seeing too much of Ian Callum's designs - they're excellent, but he seems to want to do the same front end every time. The Vanquish and especially DB9 are great looking cars, but maybe it's time to move on.
excellent point - especially given that the DB9 interior is hands-down one of the nicest interiors i've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. doody.
Yeap, Ford is terrible in copying the design of AM. I hate the new BMW, but they are atleast somewhat original.
wow it looks like a ford taurus from the front lol thats what they get for trying to redo jag...now there all forduar pieces of junk
The current XK is too high because of some design room mistakes but it can be lowered an inch fairly easily for the correct stance. Also, keep in mind that on the XJRs there are two different ride heights between the US and European spec. The rear undertray looked too tacked on after the fact and a bad angle for the outgoing XK8. The front can't be reworked to be lower because of new European crash legislation and coming US crash legislation to reduce fatalities in pedestrian accidents. This rate is high in the UK compared to other markets such as here. The hood is designed of different materials and to be more flexible, in some cases, actually raise several inches in order to deflect some force of the impact. Better grow to like it cuz its what we're stuck with. Personally, once you see the new XK side by side with the old one, it makes the old XK8 look like a suppository, something I've said time and again. It looks like an Aston Martin because it was designed by the ex-Aston design chief. Jaguar smiled big with the XK8 hit the showrooms and were picking up their teeth/bleeding from the mouth when the SL500/SL600 came out. Lets face it, it needs to look like an Aston if they plan to sell any. No matter how good the car is, to far too many people, its still a Jaguar (therefore, a "bad" thing). Where do you Jag haters/Aston fans run off and hide to when you examine how much Aston has borrowed from Jaguar over the years? Its a fact having Aston and Jaguar under the same roof (Ford) has hurt both brands. Jaguar is just a stepchild, they are purposefully designing cars so they are not Aston beaters. Thats pretty ****ed up in my opinion. So a little credit where credit is due.. thanks. Sunny Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
