Just back from Monterey and saw this letter in yesterday's Herald, which is a response to a recent failed attempt to move Concorso to Pacific Grove -- anybody know more about this? -- Fred

    wow, that's great mick

    >>The Concorso Italiano has been held on the Monterey Peninsula since 1985, first at Quail
Lodge in Carmel Valley, and more recently at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course in
Seaside. The event includes approximately 1,000 Italian automobiles, motorcycles and
boats, and hosts approximtely 10,000 specatators and participants.
Due to construction at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course, and in order to find a
more picturesque location, the Concorso Italiano (CI) is proposing to move to Pacific
Grove in 2008. Staff has been in discussions with CI representatives regarding the terms
of an agreement for the past several months. Although staff and the CI have not been
able to agree on the terms, CI must decide on its location for 2008 in the near future.
Given the time constraints, staff recommended that CI make its best proposal to the City
for Council consideration at this meeting.<<

so....if it's not going to be at black horse, and it's not going to be in PG, then.....where?

    Interesting

    Thanks, great reference

Sounds like this is another thread to merge with the "Why I Live in California" thread.

CI might not be green enough to make it past the tree and bunny huggers anymore.

A move would be good, actually. The Bayonet Black Horse facility is nice for golf, but too many trees (dropping stuff) for a concours event of this size.

The parking was atrocious -- I had my Ferrari (judging) and Jeep (runabout) up there, and the best they could do is put the 328s under a bunch of trees in a wind storm and give me a 'VIP parking' pass that put me in the next ZIP code.

I hope they get it sorted out. :(

I just got a letter from them asking if I'd had trouble with the "Gold Class" food service.

There were some issues with the service and supply (food and utensils ran out for a while).

The special parking still seemed pretty far away.

I got the same letter. I'm having trouble seperating this years bad service from last years ;-)

The food service has always been challenging - to say the least.

Since I've been going to Quail for a few years, they sent me an order form offering the tickets for $225, up from $175 in 2007. I sent in my order for Quail tickets and was then refused as they'd sold out of the 'preferred' tickets but that 'general' tickets would go on sale Jan. 2nd for $250. While I'm not happy about the price increase I'll be even unhappier if they sell more tickets than last year. Great event, but it seems they might be getting a bit "too precious". We went to Concorso the first year it moved and have attended Quail ever since.

Been to Concorso five years in a row. I think it is a fun event. Enter the car and park on the green for a $75 fee that includes two tickets. Pretty good deal to me. Never eat there, too many great places in Carmel. Always take a lunch in a basket and have a little family picnic. Not a bad outing in my opinion. I hope they get the location nailed down!

I had a "Gold Class" ticket and got the same letter. The line for food was very long, in addition to the parking being somewhere near Guam.

I appreciate the difficult logistics of an event like this. I agree with JSL it's a very fair deal for what I paid (I think $150 including the entry fee for the car), and a great event. However the location at Black Horse wasn't ideal, so maybe they can improve the event now that they have to move it.

Long term it looks like a "no-win".

Just like at Pebble Beach how do they keep the people away without keeping the people away?

How does it go? "That restaurant is too popular now, nobody goes there anymore".

Quail was a good venue but if you didn't get there at 7:00 AM you were in line forever. The new event there is certainly more intimate, for those that actually get a ticket.

I got hosed on the early tickets as well, despite receiving the mailing -- swallowed my pride, called at 8:30 am on Jan. 2, and scored my tix. Looking forward to it.

Now I hear it's on for this year at the usual spot, then they're looking to move it, I have no idea where.

I'm frankly burnt out on the whole thing, but it is nice to run into old friends. :)

    Cheers,

Well....now the word seems to be that because of construction at Bayonet golf course (including a new hotel) -- Concorso won't be there this year. And seems that they don't know where it will be.

Anybody have any better info than this?

I called Concorso a few weeks ago and they didn't know.

    Thanks,

    Fred

I have heard it will be at The Marina Airport. Doesn't matter to me, I will be at The Quail.

They screwed the event up by getting greedy and moving to Black Horse. Now they can have people walking around the nice scenic concrete runway looking at the 1,345 308's on display.

God, I hope you're not serious! The Marina Airport is a helicopter parking lot -- there's nothing out there but cement.

Hey, nothing wrong with having cars on cement, but that just does not sound like a good place for the show!

    Cheers,

You may want to check your facts on as to why Concorso moved from the Quail Lodge to Black Horse.

I know exactly why. It's called greed. Quail did not want to give up more space to the event. So instead of keeping it at a reasonable level with a good crowd, great location it was time to move. That way we can have more people ($) more 308's, GT4"s, Alfa's, and any other thing claiming to be Italian ($$) and best yet more tents to line the green hawking everything from trinkets to tire irons ($$$).

BTW, we all know some of you associated with Concourso are on here and not happy you're getting bad publicity. Tough. You are hearing feed back from previous clients. Black Horse was a joke. Anybody who had previously spent years at Quail thought it was a horrible location. Putting cars on hills was dumb, the food was mediocre at best and the lines for anything were awful.

At least at the nice Marina airport you get to be on flat ground and get the scenic look of Salinas and cement.

You didn't mention the Cadillac Allantes and Chrysler LeBarons (rich Corinthian leather don'chaknow!).
