Wasn't there someone looking for a local 308 GT4 not long ago? I searched for the post but I'll be darned if I can find it. I can't remember if it was someone local or maybe it was posted in another forum??

The car I thought I had contact info for is back up on craigslist for what looks to be a decent price. I talked with the owner last time he had it up, seems to be pretty legit and honest, but I can't personally vouch either.

    Here's the ad http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/cto/877028758.html

No affiliation, no personal interest yadda yadda yadda.....just thought I remembered somebody looking for one.

That seems like a screaming deal, BUT it does look like it will require lots of work.

It sounds like he's done a lot of mechanical work but it also sounds like it needs body work. If I had more room and more play money I'd go look at it. I think last time he had it closer to $18-19K. Sounds like a "motivated" seller.

I have personal knowledge of this car, it is more than "a little" rusty...think doors, think quarter panels. One should not think of this as a ropey $15K car, but rather a (potential) nice $45K car.

Most "cheap" Ferrari's end up being very expensive!

I kind of suspected that would be the case with the price and this being at least the second time he listed it. I would think if it wasn't that bad to fix, someone would have snapped it up.

Of course if the interior and mechanicals are rebuilt like he says the body work COULD be taken care of for a reasonable price. Still $15k for the car plus $10-15K for body work and you'd still be pretty upside down on the car.

OH, and you don't have to tell me about "cheap" Ferrari's ending up expensive, I have one in my garage right now!!

By $45K, do you mean what you'd have into it or what it's potentially worth? Could this car, with its not-too-exciting 62K miles (on the chassis, gearbox, etc.), ever be that nice? I have to think there are better candidates out there.

I doubt it would ever be worth 45k unless you spent 55/60 to get it there and even then you would be hard pressed to find someone that would pay that much for a GT4 unless it was a factory restoration, (and I LIKE GT4's)

He says it is running terribly rich at the moment, kiss those new rings goodbye then. And why would a freshly rebuilt engine have a leaky pan gasket? Come on! If they can't get the pan gasket to seal what's the rest like?

Get it cheap...drive the piss out of it. Who cares about fixing rust? Sheesh. Turn it into a track day ***** even!
Not every Ferrari (or car for that matter) needs "restoration".

The high end on the NADA is 35.9K There are 3 in Hemmings between 26-30K. If they are concourse quality they can go for much more.

    Cheers!

Running terribly rich (bordering on flooding?) on a fresh engine "washes" the cylinders (of oil), possibly compromising the break in process and/or longevity of the rings and/or cylinder bores, leaves heavy carbon deposits on the valves and in the combustion chambers, also the exhaust. It also dilutes and contaminates the oil.

It is just as damaging to older engines.

Hopefully this hasn't been going on too long.

That was the second go aground for that car. The other question that came up when I talked to Jdubba about this this weekend is this. With a brand new rebuild, why is the pan gasket leaking? If they got that wrong, what else got "missed"?

It happens. You mean to tell me that no one has ever had any work done at the dealer or at their mechanic's and it has allways turned out 100% perfect every time? Don't make me laugh! I'm not saying this is the case here, but really.

We are talking about FLAT gasket between two machined pieces of cast aluminum. If a mechanic can't get that to seal what is the more complicated stuff going to be like? .............really!

Did you see the 308 GT4 in Spokane on Craig's List last week? The owner claimed that it does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, and gets 26 MPG on the freeway.
