'84 QV Driver's window so slow it barley moves. This is after I re-lubed everything about a year ago. Here's my question:
is it easier to just buy the motor/cable/pulley assembly and install?

Cost is secondary to ease and performance. I have read about a dozen window-related threads and there seems to be about a dozen different recommendations to attack this problem.

Has there been any definitive way to fix this?

Definitive? Probably not as there can be more than one cause for the problem. First and foremost I believe is the hardening of the original grease in the gear assembly that operates the drum and cable. When you say you've "lubed everything" did that include taking apart the gear assembly, cleaning out the old hardened grease? If you haven't done that yet the problem will persist and get worse with time.

What I would call secondary causes are friction and drag from the pulleys and the window front & rear guides, and a lack of volts getting to the motor from the switch. There are threads on all of these problems. Bottom line is I don't think buying all new kit will do as well dollarwise as finding a shop that can address the problems and just pay them to have it fixed. If you're brave (and/or foolish) there is all the info available to fix it yourself although many would describe this option as a life changing - not necessarily for the better - experience

Have you heard about the power window booster? that might help.

When you say "relubed" did you actually take it all out, clean the old grease out & relube it or did you just squirt some white grease around ?

If its the latter I'd suggest you start with the former & if its the former then something is clearly not right. Check the electrical ground for a start & measure the voltge at the motor. Then check everything is properly aligned, the cables are correctly routed and nothing is binding. Spray a small amount of silicone lube in the window channels. Once everything is running as freely as it can then consider adding the booster boxes.

If you just increase the voltage by adding the "magic box" when there is a physical impedance/problem all you are likely to do is to burn the motor out.

it is definitely not a lube issue. the old grease was removed (it wasn't that hardended) and replaced with some of our special moly grease (my company makes high-end lubes). i still need to remove the pulleys and coat with our special anti=friction paint.

the motor and/or voltage and/or ground and/or cables are more likely the cause, which is why i thought a new cable/motor assembly may be the easier answer. has anyone installed the cable/motor assembly?

    does birdman's gizmo work?

my feeling is that if someone could find the window mechanism wheels with ballbearings and which would therefore roll smoothly under pressure, that would help the window issue.
Those wheels in the doors don't seem to be up for the job. But thats most likely just one of the issues. It does appear though that people get good results immediately after applying grease and cleaning it all out, which means its a mechanical problem rather than electrical.

How would a new cable/motor assembly address a voltage or ground problem?

It sounds like you are looking for an easy way to buy your way out of the situation. If that is so, then perhaps the person who suggested that you take it in somewhere is on the right track.

On the other hand, since your company manufactures lubes then you should either be or have access to someone who is handy. If that is the case just address the basics that are well documented.

IOW, and do not mean to come across as harsh, but throwing new parts at the problem probably is not going to get you where you want to be.

FYI, you can make them yourself for under $50. There are plans on site to do it. Radio Shack had all the parts except for the relays. And to sum my old post, yes, they work. (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137309168&postcount=26) They were the very last thing we did (after cleaning all contacts, loosening the tension pulley, lubing everything in site and cleaning the grounds. Plus, of course, installing Birdman's Fuseboxes) and they still work well a year on and going. Here is the page for the box schematics: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=137309168#post137309168.

Keep the white grease for your car with the crank on the front, that stuff turns to clay in a few years, use a quality grease in the gear box and on the cables. Use Silicon spray on the window tracks.

You can buy nylon pulleys with installed ball bearing at any good hardware store. Yhey are the wheels used on sliding screen doors and are about the same size as the Ferrary pulleys.

I just did my driver's side window today in my 83 308. I took out each pulley, cleaned them, lubed them with grease and put them all back in. Other than working in tight spaces, it was a piece of cake in Ferrari terms. I also installed the "Gizmo" and the window is incredibly fast relative to what it was (barely moving and making weird noises). I definitely recommend the product. it works great.

I looked around for these, but they're NLA at Lowes or Home Depot - but they DID have the steel ones with ball-bearing races - better than the nylons, I suppose. The key to making new pulleys 'work' in this application is to check the spacing between the pulley and the surface its mounting to. The newer pulleys needed some stand-off clearance so they could spin freely, so I used washers between the pulleys and the door bodywork.
