.....but i think ALL of the V8's since the 328 look dated, kinda like afterthoughts.
they aren't ugly, but dated. the 458 is ugly, and so is the Enzo.

a modern mid engined Ferrari looks more like an insect than a race car.
bold, functional design is one thing. but exotic for the sake of being exotic....
    see attached pic!

it could be worse though, they could be killing these cars with retro-styling(read 'out of ideas') like what they are doing with the V12's

if you've ever wondered why so many in the automotive press feel like Pininfarina 'lost it', its because they did.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I think Pininfarina's designs have looked great in recent history. I thought the F430 was a slight step back from the 360 in terms of beauty, but a step forward in aggressive looks. Then the new F458 has, in my opinion, restored the beauty of the 360 (not that it looks like the 360) while retaining the aggressiveness of the 430.

And I suppose your hair is still parted down the middle and you just don't get the way these darned kids dress these days..... I think the styling strikes a nice balance between exotic and drive ability unlike a lambo which to me is just purely exotic and "look at me"....

I still bet the real pics as well as the car in person are stunning..........

    Just MHO....

When the 430 came out, I wanted a 360. Since the 458 came out, i want an F430. I have a feeling i'll want an F430 for the rest of time. Ferrari is going downhill in the styling department.

except for the straight profile shot, I kinda think its ugly too. Then again, I am underwhelmed by the California too and I HAVE seen that one in person.

The interior is a great departure ... seems very cluttered and un-Ferrari like.

Not having the gated shifter as even an option is just a damn shame.

This is all subjective of course. Objectively, I'm sure the performance will be nothing short of amazing.

    I disagree.

I think it is the best looking modern car ever designed.

458 is a beautiful design in the eyes of a significant majority.
An analogy could be a supermodel like Cindy Crawford or Elle Mcpherson ,also admired by most of the guys.
    But not by all....

from a design standpoint, the only car i really liked since Enzo's death was the 456gt.
fresh, functional, and moving in a forward direction. it's the sexiest, most elegant 2+2 Ferrari ever built. i respect your opinion but i just cant attach myself to the newer models when Pininfarina designed so many timeless classics in the past that were the product of imagination, as opposed to satisfying a market.
however the modern engines are awesome!!! what i wouldnt give to shoehorn the 458's powerplant into my 328!!!

haha., get it straight, when it comes to Ferrari, im stuck in the 50's,60's,70's, and 80's.
but not by choice. that's Pininfarina's fault!
i feel privileged to own a Ferrari that was built when Enzo was running things. being a Ferrari fan does not mean that i have to blindly follow all they do or agree with the direction that the company is moving in.
personally, i think they 'sold-out'. when Enzo died, he took the mystique and aura with him.

thats funny cause i think the 458 looks like Ferrari's less angled version of the Gallardo!
which looks like a less expensive version of the Murcialago, which looks like an imitation of a Countach which is the same car that sent Ferrari reeling in a direction away from race cars but toward cars for posers. (i love the design of the Countach, another timeless classic, but not for Ferrari)
its sad to think that the innovator is now the imitator.
if Ferrari were to look at what another company is doing,
it should be Porsche -not Lamborghini.
the 911 is a race car for the private owner. its basically the same car it was designed to be in the 60's. it was never redesigned, it was developed.
50 years of refinement to be a better race car.
Ferrari had that potential with the original 308 and abandoned it for no real reason at all.
i never met anyone who thought the 308 was ugly. anyone.

thanks but no thanks, i'd rather keep updating what i already have. its more rewarding

The Enzo is gorgeous, but I do agree the 458 is a bit less than satisfying

I do have some mixed feelings on the 458, was going to leave this thread alone, and chalk it up as "to each his own"...but, if you are keen to the likes of the 456gt, and Porsche, then its obvious we come from 2 completely different schools. Im simply not following any of your rationale.

Take a look at the GranTurismo, Pininfarina has clearly not lost their touch.

    Anyways...to each his own :)

the reason that all the modern ferraris are looking ugly is that they are reducing the width of tha headlamps and are increasing their length for better aerodynamics....and the whole front looks empty and incomplete ...all of the vintage ferraris have wide headlamps ....
and another reason imho is that the twin tail lights looks like corvette ... from some angle ferrari looks like corvette imho ....thats why they moved for a single pair of lights without caring that its looking ugly or doesnt suit the design ...they have to change their car from covette .... no car lambo or aston or porsche looks like any other car ..but one can easily mistaken for a ferrari that its corvette or something else ...

I think that the 458 is a fantastic looking car...except for the interior.

We don't have all the same tastes and that's normal. No big deal.

Arguing about aesthetics is a lost cause as it's all very subjective.

I think everyone should reserve their judgment until they see one in person. The reaction to every new Ferrari after the 360 has been negative. Then we see it in person or in magazines and, slowly but surely, we begin to see that it's not half bad looking. The F355 is a good looking car but it's dated. I'm tired of hearing comparisons regarding the design of a 2010 Ferrari and a 1994 Ferrari. What about pop up headlights on the 458? Maybe that would make some people here happy...

What? You think that the reason Ferrari are using single tail lights is because they make them look like a Corvette? Is it the same story with the 275 GTB?

Yeah, let us know how that works out...

Sure, you are not alone in this regard.
When 458 is replaced then you'll want the 458 and so on at every new replacement in the future.......

Nice justification for choosing cheaper car.

i know its in ferrari history ...but whats the reason of switching from twin tail lights to single in 2010 ... because many cars like nissan gtr ,corvette ,lotus etc have twin tail lights but neither have a single pair thats why they have switched...and 275 have its rear number plate in the middle and their is no prancing horse logo at the back ... right now ferrari are more brand concious and are putting their logo at every side of the car whether it looks good or not ... if they had put number plate in the middle of california its back doesnt looked empty... ... and as ihave mentioned nissan gtr . corvette ,lotus doesnt have that good brand image as of ferrari so they dont require to change their design if have some similarities with another car but ferrari have to ...again imho

and by the way ferrari copied the tear drop window design of corvette in their 599 fiorano... and if they dont put that fender it would have been looked like a corvette...

I agree, the cars a huge let down for me. Atleast lambos still making good looking cars, theres always something else to spend money on.

I want to chime in here...

While I agree getting the older car is going to always be cheaper.. it's not true that people are trying to justify it..

I could have picked up a 430 for 30k or so more than the 360.. I simply just thought the 360 was more beautiful.. I liked the performance and interior of the 430 more.. but sitting next to eachother.. the 360 just turned me on more. period..

I admit I was close to springing an extra 30-40k for a murceilago.. but I just couldn't justify my desire for the murci for paying the extra money.. I wanted the modena.. In the end I am happy I bought the car I wanted.. I am sure that is what this OP meant as well..

I truly think that since the modena ferrari has gone into a bit awkward territory designwise.. where they cannot decide on curves or hard lines.. The 458 is an example of both curves and hard lines and I am not positive I like the dichotomy of the two.

I would prefer to have them either stick with hard lines all around (testarossa) or curves (360/original testarossa)..

For instance, Lamborghini sticks with hard lines, Aston Martin sticks with curves, the entire cars are molded around a general asthetic..

Ferrari is mixing hard lines and curves in their cars all over the place.. the 430 has always been IMO an 360 injected with testosterone.. instead of it's own car.. the 458 looks like they wanted some curves but are trying to keep hard lines to help the car look masculine..

I hate that decision, I would prefer they stick with all curves (360) or all hard edges (testarossa)...
