OK, original idea for Off Topic forums was to keep it off the "quality" Ferrari forums. We then created a "Politics & Religion" OT forum to keep the other OT sections "quality". Well, I guess in theory it works.

The negatives have been wars from the P&R section have spread elsewhere in the community. It's disappointing to see long-time good users become enemies of each other and be banned, just because of the P&R section. If I didn't think it spread negatively throughout the community, then I wouldn't take any actions.

I'm proposing we remove the Politics & Religion forum all together and disallow any P&R posts in OT. Basically the informal policy most people have at work... never discus Politics or Religion with workmates.

We're all passionate about Ferrari, I hate to see something OT make any negative impact on our core community discussions.

I agree that it doesn't seem to be doing FCHAT any good.

Good points have been brought up. I agree that it is causing problems.
Is there some way you can have a limited amount of threads in there, so that can help easy moderation of those thread. Each thread can deal with different issues. And if it gets too much, it can be closed down?

Would agree that its net effect will always eventually be devisive.
Anyway, it is a Ferrari board.

I say leave it, but moderation needs to be heavier. Delete post quicker, etc. Which means that the users need to be reporting post as needed(smartly).

    Yeah i agree there.
Moderation of those boards shoud be bordering on unfair. If it is a problem, deal with it quickly. And now, they cant say that they wernt warned.

I believe in the motto, "do one thing, do it well". Keep the whole thing Ferrari/car related, and I think we'd all benefit.

My $0.02 is that we should make any decision on this matter after the election in 12 days. I suspect than many of the political passions will (hopefully) cool after Nov. 2.

    I would keep it.

I've gotten to know some people/viewpoints from other countries that would not post elsewhere in Fchat, since most off topics posters aren't owners at all.

I don't have any problem with you taking a tough(er) line and nailing anybody taking it onto the other non off-topic areas.

Heck, how would I ever have known this:

"Ohh, for all ya FC Duck hunters out there. I have a lease down by Stephenville, so let me know if you want to go hunting with me sometime."

Hey, I was there visiting inlaws last year and I was noting the hunting potential! College town, I notice.

    But you know best.

I think every user thinks that mod actions in the P&R section are always personally motivated. So it's really hard to moderate. Darth got heat for actions on Art and I got heat for warning Nibbles. Who said moderating was easy though and it's tough to separate your community involvement as a moderator and as a user, even when you have it straight, other users might not.

    Rob,

I try to avoid controversial topics, but I feel the need to drop my two centavos on this one. I love FChat for the wide variety of topics and from time to time I will troll over the off-topic and P&R sections. While I don't personally post up frequently (I think I might have once or twice) it is always interesting to see what people have to say. I know it is ultimately your decision and I am sure it is more of a headache for you to have to police all the individuals who don't follow the rules but I think it adds value to allow members the wide variety of subject that you do. As an alternative, I would suggest that you pull the P&R section from the general public and you might want to make it so that only "subscribed" users can post to that topic. Who knows, it might boost subscriptions and clean up the topic at the same time :D Thanks for listening and Long Live FChat!!!!

    Cheers,
    Travis

I still say, if you take it away, it will just come back in other Forums, like OT. Just my 2 cents...

I think the f-chat democrats are padding the Poll Registrations, using multiple names and what not to control the outcome of this poll. I vote for a recount!

Though this sounds good in theory, wasn't the P&R section created BECAUSE it kept sprouting up in O/T...? If you kill the forum, that stuff will just regrow itself in O/T again... If people are getting banned and dragging stuff into other forums, well, then, they're not being mature about it... Maranello Man and i disagree on almost every point in politics, but we get along fine outside of the P&R forum; same thing with a few others...

I waded in for the first time on Napolis' thread regarding Sinclair but normally can't be bothered. This one happened to be in an area I operate so thought I'd weigh in.

I suspect there is a 95/5 thing happening in the section - 95% of the bull$h!t is a function of 5% of the posters. As with other areas, the site gives us the ability to ignore other posters on an individual basis, so perhaps a reminder about how that works is a compromise between chucking the section completely and leaving it as it is; those that participate need to take responsiblility both for their own input as well as for dealing with inflammatory areas that bother them. Of course if it denigrates to personal stuff in PMs that's a whole 'nuther thing.

Having said all of that, if monitoring this section (and having it take up space on the server) takes a disproportionate amount of the various moderators' time, then chuck it. This ain't "Politics and Religion Chat" so this area shouldn't turn in to such a dog's breakfast that it impinges on the main purpose of the site as a whole.

    Cheers
    Kevin

I have never posted anything in the OT forum but from time to time I look at some selective posts. If I am not mistaking there is already a warning "not for the weak at heart". I'd say if you can't take it don't dish it out! I vote to keep it.

Me think that with the current political climate the diversivness has reached new heights. Since nothing good ever comes out of such discussions it becomes a battle of wits.
In reality it has nothing to do with FerrariChat since it does not effect Ferrari.
As for it spilling over into Off topic, well, we will just have to moderate that out there and delete threats that are political or posts that get political.

There are plenty of political discussion boards out there. You feel the need to rub your elbobs with the Right or the Left, feel free to log off F-Chat and log into PolitChat.com

I do not want to see friendships and future friendships destroyed because two people have different political views. I am sure James G.'s political views are different than mine. Heck, I know that 50% of the Country thinks different than I do, the problem is I know that 100% of them are wrong! :)

I just want to be able to call up MaranelloMan or Art and have a beer with either or both of them without worrying they think one way or another of me.

And to make it clear: I am a Conservative Liberal! :)

Sheesh, if you dont like something dont go there, simple.

and DONT force it to be taken away from other people who DO enjoy it

This is about free speech on Fchat, We are mostly adults here so if you are too sensitive to read P&R, DONT GO THERE & ALLOW OTHERS TO ENJOY IT !!!!!!

Kill it. It brings brings nothing of quality to the site.

    While you're at it...

    1. Move the OT and B&I forums to either the Silver or Rossa area as an incentive to subscribe.

    2. Impose a strictly-enforced ban on religeous and political commentary:

1st offense -- post/thread deleted and user warned, noted in moderor forum

2nd offense -- post/thread deleted and user temporarily banned, noted in moderator forum

3rd offense -- post/thread deleted and user permanently banned, noted in moderator forum

...with no refunds on membership fees.

Personally, I can't wait until after the election. I suspect that Maranelloman is correct. Things will cool off. This has been a very devisive election. I even got into an argument with my 81-year old mother tonight (Hint, she is not a Bush supporter.)

So let's wait until after the election to see if things cool down.

However, I do think that the the "not for the weak of heart" tag is part of the problem. If anything, P&R needs stricter rules. Any name calling, and you're gone. If you can't say it without cheap shots, don't say it. This section really needs a zero tolerance rule. Because if you let even the milder stuff go, it escalates in a hurry.

P&R is an area that inspires passion, just like Ferraris. But if you can't debate your passions in a thoughtfull intelligent manner, you are just hurting your casue because you are turning off more people than convincing.

Thus, it may make sense to go with a no pic rule in this area. In fact, if a pic doesn't have at least a car or a boobie in it, then it should not be allowed anyway on F-Chat!

Now, if you sorry SOBs don't quit jamming your fascist, jack-booted, lilly-lipped, pansy waisted crap down my throat, I'm gonna kick your hinny!

    (Just Kidding...)

    Dale
