I've got two cracked wheel covers that I need to replace (the one in the pic is for reference). I know where to buy them, but how do I remove the old ones and put the new ones on? Do I have to remove the tire?

The easiest way is to remove the wheel and pop it out from the inside of the rim.

(For the super anal-retentive among us, it's also a good chance to clean the *inside* of the wheel!)

On a 328 (I'm assuming it is the same) yes, you have to remove the tire, push the center badge out from the back, install the new one.

Remove the wheel from the car.

The badges are mounted with 2-sided tape into a black plastic holder. Only way I could get the old badges out was to drill a small 2-3mm (~1/8") hole thru the back of the holder & press on the back of the old badge until it popped out.

After I installed the new badge, I sealed the hole with black RTV.

If I remember correctly, I didn't have to remove the badge holder from the wheel to do this.

Verell - We must be talking about two different center caps. The OEM ones that I've seen are all "push in" type installations. The badge and the black pastic holder are a single piece; taking them apart would probably destroy both items. The only exception would be the 355 ones with a retaining clip (and even those can be swapped out for the press-in ones).

I'm curious which ones you're working with. ??

    Daniel,
These were the factory wheel caps for my '82 Euro 308 GTS QV's stock 390mm wheels.

I'd bought reproduction discs from Superformance.co.uk, & clearly they were intended to go in place of the original colored discs.

Looked like there wasn't any way to get the original assembly apart. Then I happened to notice that one of my OEM discs was slightly loose in the black plastic holder so I could tell that it could be removed If I could apply pressure from behind. I figured I had nothing to loose as the alternative was to return the discs & buy new cap ass'ys.

It could be that the original adhesive had given out over time.

    Yo!!! Daniel at Ricambi!!!!!

Thanks for the set of airbox (battery cover) nuts!!!

They were PERFECTO! for the 1977 308GTB airbox, even though they DID say "battery cover" on them....

I threw them in the glovebox, and will put them on in New Orleans as I go for the 'Platinum', this year.

J/K on the 'Platinum', but if I have enough time I PROMISE to at least wash the car, and hide the whiskey bottles!

Why not just drill a hole into it and put a bearing puller in the hole, the type that looks like a knitting needle? The old ones are going in the garbage right?

You could also drill two holes and slide a piece of mechanics wire through them and tie the loose ends together, pull on the wire with vise grips.

My girlfriends Honda fell of a jack once and made a hell of mess of the car, the jack just bent and boom. I try to not jack up cars after that if at all possible.

Thanks for the responses. It's for a 355, so I'll count on being able to just clip them back into place when I remove the tires.

But for the super-super anal retentive, this is a chance to clean the rims under the tire.

Don't want to lose points for dust there.

its not that simple you have to remove the WHEEL and you need a special tool not sure what its called as the centre caps are held in by a metal clip which has two small holes and the tool squeezes it toghter so you can pop it out then you have to do the same to re-attach. iam sure someone knows what the lttle tool is called.

If you are not going to use the old ones--Take a hammer and smash the cap out then just snap the new one in place. Shouldn't take more than a minute for each one.

    I dare you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the easiest method if you don't want the old ones:

Take a corkscrew and push it through the center of the plastic, twist it in a few turns, then pull it out.

Insert the new ones and tap in with a rubber mallet. Line up the horses with the valve or straight with the spokes on all four.

Take the same corkscrew and go inside, open a bottle of wine and pat yourself on the back as you look at your new caps.

If you want to keep the old caps, take off the wheel and tap them out from the inside. Then clean the inside of your wheels.
