If I may, according to its chassis number, it is a July 84 build date. I have #24 and #26 also from that month. They reset build number for US MY85 I suspect.
I also have few cars with January 85 around 53025 that I can't explain except to think of problems of import quotas or delivery date more than a build date.

    Tan int.
It shows on the door tag a 9/84 build date.
Also would like to finally find out if this color/model is a one of a kind, any ideas?

Thanks for the replies all, understand there were other 308's painted Marrone, I have seen 2 or 3 over the years. I have just been trying to determine if 53823 is the only '85. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

US law allows cars build up to 1 year prior to be labeled as the next year model. Thus, a QV built in Jan of 84 could, if Ferrari had wanted to, be labeled as a MY85.

I didn't know about that law in the US.
In Europe, it is more from the 1st of July, I have to check for Italy precisely.
But I was not talking about MY, but about the door jamb label of the US vehicle that shows the month of build.

Good news. My car still shows the owner I bought the car from (over 3 years ago).

I think you will have my data and pictures. Else just let me know.
Production date on your site says jan 1983, but that was the delivery date.
Production date was somewhere in 1982 of course.
I have a service record from december 1982 to get the car ready for delivery.

I can confirm the validity of a 1985 being built in July 84... my very late Euro 1984 GTS QV, 52703 was built in June 1984 (Ferrari won't or can't give me a more precise date), but it was built in the last week of 1984 production, someone told me it's the 3rd last 1984 308. It came down the production line in the middle of a group of 4 288 GTOs! (by serial number) As was typical of Ferrari and their gradual rather than distinct changeovers, my 84 had all the running changes of the 1985 models already.

Yes, in 1984 at least, the 308 model changeover on the production line happened around the end of June.

Yes. The US law states that a model year can only be produced over a period that crossed one Jan 1 date for the designated year - so theoretically, as you say, a car model year for 2018 could begin production on Jan 2, 2017, and be produced for 23.9 months until Dec 31, 2018. Nobody does that full period, of course, but it is not unusual for a manufacturer to introduce a new model year early by several months. Normal showroom cycles in the US mean that the new model year cars typically show up in September of the prior year. We can expect the 2018 models from almost all manufacturers to be in the showrooms in September 2017 - which means for manufacturing and especially shipping timelines, those cars must be built in June or July. I currently have on order a 2018 Audi RS3, it will be built in the first week of June, delivery will be late August.

Aside from the above information I added to johnk...'s post, I would add that the 80s 308s sold in Europe don't seem to have a door jamb build plate. To find out the month/year of manufacture for my Euro 308 (delivered on Jersey, Channel Islands), I had to contact Ferrari directly.

Wade...a correction needed for mine; # 48345, Production date is Oct. 1983, not 1984. By October 1984, she was already being driven by it's 1st owner.

Also...the car now resides in the Raleigh, NC area (I'm still the owner).

    Cheers!

Not in all over in Europe.

I don't know about Italy. But in Belgium at that time, car sold new in July was not "update" to the following year unlike France.

Btw, there was some "dealer" who try to sold in France an car MY 1990 who was a MY 1989 in Belgium ! ( A car sold new in Belgium on July, August .. 1989 )

Honestly, as with calling out the cars "Date", shouldn't it be the "Build Date" rather than the so-called Model Year Date? That will vary depending on where the car was shipped to and then sold. In the USA, the MY is always called up as the following year. Cars built in 2017 are labelled MY2018 and so forth.
I think that the only relevant date is the Build Date. Any other opinions on this? The only date that appears on a vehicle Heritage Certificate is the Build Date.
Which means that a car built in Europe in January 1975 could take 3 months to ship to Australia, spend 9 months in the Dealer showroom and the be sold in January 1976...? Only the Registration Department would call it a 1976, because that is when it was first registered for the road and plated.
Looking at a car's history, to me the most important date is when it emerged off the manufacturers assembly line. Opinions?
