Patience! A guy called Demon on another forum started me off down this road using cloths inside the unit and we have taken it from there. The first 6 pictures show how to make the final version of the wiper. The addition of the ice lolly stick and foam give a strong pad to wipe around the inside of the light. Without these, these magnets slide around inside the bag. The magnets are the super strong neodymium ones I bought off eBay. It would be better still to put magnets on each side of the stick as even with the strength the distance is limited. The foam is just some packaging foam that was lying around. The bag is a glasses bag (from cheap Costco reading glasses). Anything will do as long as it is non shedding and will not drop any of the bits inside. I tied it properly shut. The access is via the inner most bulb hole and a tip is the roll the pad and insert into the hole but before it goes fully in, make sure it is not too tight so it will definitely come out again. The bag must be tied onto a piece of nylon non-shedding string so you can pull it out. Be warned, these magnets are strong and the bag does latch onto metalwork below the lamp unit. The technique is to push the wiper to the front of the unit with a short wooden dowel then pick it up with another magnet on the outside wrapped inside a cloth (so as not to scratch the outside of the lens) and wipe the inside clean. I used detail spray on one side of the wiper with the other side dry for drying. For light dust marks you probably need only the wiper. For the place where the cover and unit are very close together I used no foam in the bag to clean the dust away (see last two pics). With a bit of patience, playing around and making sure everything is secure (otherwise you will be splitting them) you can pretty much get to anywhere. The results. My units had water marks in both sides and the right one was particularly bad. I took some befores but it is hard to get them to show up on a picture. Many who looked at the car tried to wipe them and usually asked what it was. Now there is nothing that is noticeable. I hope it works for you.........M Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have just sent my lights out after attempting to do this project myself. They came out amazing. The challenge with removing the lens cover is that it is glued on both sides. See photos. Ideally you would need a U shaped knife to cut them off without risk. Additional I was told that the manufacture uses a very small pin in a random location to hold the lens in place while the adhesive is drying. If anyone is looking to send their lights out I used Ferrari of Huston contact Steve Egyed Phone: 713-772-3868, Email: [email protected]. Steve does not cut the lens he cuts the light open so there is no risk of the lens cracking. It is cut in a place where the gasket covers when its installed (not visible at all). The piece was sent to me by Steve it is not from my light, he had a piece from a damaged light that he sent to help explain. Great job on the lenses but do you or does anyone know how to re-chrome the headlight bowls. Mine are not in brilliant condition with the yellow showing through. Can anyone help please?
can you tell me what you used to reseal the lens also i was told a little heat from a heat gun helps any word on that
I took my headlights apart . After removing parts, Put in oven at 325 for 15 minutes, they come apart fairly easy. The grey material softens. Clean the lens , polish them, then clearcoat them on both sides. I also repainted the color on the housing. To reglue use RTV clear silione. The lenses are very durable. Mine turned out excellent and saved thousands. The clearcoat will extend the clarity of the lenses.
So when you baked them did they still need to be cut out or could they just seperate? How difficult was the material at that point?
Ugh, sorry to resurrect a zombie thread but just wanted to chime in. I tried the "magnet method" of cleaning the inside of the lens while in situ. Conclusion: Honestly, I think it's worse believe it or not. The problem is that there is no way to avoid picking up debris from inside the sealed unit (I tried cleaning out loose dust/debris before magnets) and that will leave micro abrasions in the plastic lens when scooting around with magnets. It's such a major buzzkill to look at these hazy and water marked lenses. I'm ready to pop the units out and send them to someone to pull apart, sand, polish, clearcoat, reseal, and return. I know my limitations and I just don't trust myself on DIY (I know I'll f**k up that operation and end up buying new units). Anybody aware of a shop in SoCal with experience doing this sort of thing?
I do them, here are a couple of my older posts http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430-sponsored-yellow-compass-group/452703-430-scud-carbon-fiber-headlight-restoration-project.html http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/360-430-sponsored-yellow-compass-group/431812-360-modena-headlights.html#post143065769
Good job! Thanks! what a shame! i could only read the DIY because i can not open the pictures! Anyone with this problem?
I recently had "Mr. Headlight Restoration Co." in Pennsylvania restore both of my headlights and it was such a good experience that I wanted to share it with the community. You can see in the attached pics that both of my lights had a heavy white film on the inside of the lens. These guys were able to take them apart, remove the film and put them back together good as new. The pics speak for themselves and the service was top notch. I was really nervous to send the lights out, considering they're $5k each to replace, these guys made me very comfortable with constant communication and updates pics along the way. I definitely recommend their services. https://www.mrheadlightrc.com/ Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
