400i Timing Chain Length

The timing chain adjuster was at the end and my chain would make "clucking" noises after the engine was warm so I decided to replace the chain. I ordered a replacement from one of the usual suppliers and it was WAAAAYYY to long. I ordered another replacement from another usual supplier and was told that they are NLA. I then ordered a standard piece of roller chain that looks to be of a much better quality than the original or the long replacement.

So, the question is: how long should it be? I was going to simply make it he same length as the original, by link count, but I'm not even sure that the original is correct.

Also, I had a dozen steel "caps" made to replace the POC fiber one. So if any body want's one PM me.

Sam, I ordered the bulk chain but what to be certain of the length.

 

Here is the cap I had made. PM me if you want one.

I put two O-ring grooves to keep it straight and seal better.
