Then maybe a lease was the best thing to do. At least with older ferraris u dont lose much if at all.
The new ferraris lack a bit of soul to me.
If i were him id get a 430 as the cost to maintain, specially brakes etc are still cheaper.

Natkingcolebasket69, I understand your confusion, hopefully, this helps:

Sau Kweng Tan is a man that genuinely embodies Carpe Diem.

I still remember his first post where he said he saved for seven years for a 488 and he's just a middle-class background. I applauded him for his dedication! Especially when he proclaimed it was not going to be a garage queen. I understand 400 miles is that very definition, but sometimes life priorities change. Who an I am to judge? The only reason I bring it up is he repeatedly was adamant how it was going to be driven hard and be taken to the track.

A few weeks later, even though he made it a point to let us know he stretched to get the 488,and to further emphasize that he told us all he barely had enough money for rims and that he doesn't plan to buy another car anytime soon; it all quickly changed as the car he now wanted in addition to the 488 was a 355 or 360; then decided against that to get an S2000 instead because of high maintenance costs, and then changed again a few weeks later dropped another 170K on a GTS (all cash.) So in the span of 1 month, he dropped 1/2 million (he made it a point to let us know he paid all cash for the 488 as well)

As seen in this thread, he's now getting rid of the 488, and going back to the original (wait, second, no - the third plan all along, or is forth?)

He's was so stretched he even told us he can't afford a license plate holder and said he rather uses zip ties then pay for one. Hey, the affluent are known to be eccentric and quirky. Wait, I forget, he's not affluent (by his own words) - so I'll say different strokes for different folks.

It's all in his photos, so I'm just thinking about how I can quit my job and become his personal car broker.

I read this thread and the one attached, thanks @paulchua . I don’t see where sau was stretched if he paid with cash, apologizes if I missed it.

Vote would be any the members have referenced and FF

    Take your pick:

Here he said he saved 7 years to get the 488, and I quote "I do not have much left in the bank account."
yet a couple weeks later dropped 150K (all cash) on a GTS.

This after he said he can only afford I quote again "Only have enough for just one machine."

Remember, he's also worried about the high prices of oil changes and a license plate frame, so much he decided to use zip ties instead on his 320K 488.

    ****

All in good fun, I've been enjoying the unconventional approach Sau Kweng Tan takes toward cars and the juxtaposition of the freewheeling dropping of 1/2 million dollars to extreme frugality.

He's provided photos, so there's proof he actually is around these cars he says he owns.

    So 3 possibilities:

    1) He's telling the truth and living for today, spending every penny of his life savings (in fact that's what he told us all himself - so that's taking this all at 100% face value.)
    2) He's actually pretty affluent despite the great pains he goes to tell everybody he's a middle-class guy that's saved years and years to buy a 488. He's feigning modesty an attempt at humility - commendable, but not required here
    3) He's living vicariously through his (fill in the blank)'s cars that he has access to but really I'm talking to a 12-year-old, and I'm the true fool.

I'm leaning toward #3 myself (especially me being the fool part), but I wasn't being facetious above, I've truly been enjoying the wacky propositions Sau Kweng Tan brings to the community. If he is telling the truth, this is the kind of guy I like to party with (no, seriously). Got to be a super fun guy!

Paul I'm so happy that the little *HUNH?* that I thought in my head wasn't just me.

FWIW I'm trying to convince myself that I'm just a lowly hardworking employee of a quickie mart. It's the apparent way to a new F12 for me personally.

I am leaning towards 3 too. Entertaining for sure; well spoken. Reminds me of the thread where the car was bought on credit card.
I do consider at times stretching for a car but i learnt my lesson in my younger days so no more of that. Ideally no car payment but if i do it has to be affordable to me at least. Thats why i like the testarossa; for. 100k (which is already a lot to me) you get a dream car at a reasonable price.

The 328 is considered the most reliable of the production cars, and after 14 years of owning one, I'd have to agree. I drove mine nearly 1000 miles to N.Y. state for the Ferrari Club annual meet, and back, putting a total of about 2800 miles on the car in the process, and it never missed a beat. But I've had to spend a lot of money on parts, because the car is over 30 years old and things just wear out, on any car. And many 328 parts are becoming hard to find and quite expensive when you do find them.

Servicing is relatively affordable by Ferrari standards - engine-out is not required - but no Ferrari is inexpensive to service, and none ever will be. So you have to consider the options of getting a car that is more reliable, but older.

I would say the 308/328 family and the comparable Mondials.

    No engine-out service required.

By modern standards, the technology is not that complicated. Many F-chatters here who own these cars do their own maintenance.

    No hard-to-replace electronics.

    No depreciation.

    Fair warning: I am biased. I own a 308 QV and a Mondial 3.2.

What is the consensus on the 458 gtb? And what about the 550? Compared to the Testarossa/512 TR ?

I would suspect that after 3 years the OP made their decision some time ago. :)
