Just back from a biz trip to San Diego. Best place I ate was a hole in the wall joint up north of town, Kotija Jr. Taco Shop. Shared a carne asada lunch special with the wife. Twas yummy, filling and cheap. Highly recommend this joint if you're in the area...T

I'll be honest...I only made it to about #35 because it was making me hungry but at the same time there were only a few in that ~20 that sounded good to me. Grilled peeps? Really? No thanks. I do grilled cheese and tuna occasionally. Or ham. Or bacon.

Back in '98 I learned from my supervisor about using sour dough bread for grilled cheese...OMG! I have tried the bacon, ham or both method but just straight good old American sliced always wins out, maybe my pallet is not yet sophisticated enough? Lol

    1. Fruits such as strawberries, bananas, raspberries, blueberries, apples, pears, cranberries, cherries, etc do not belong in a grilled cheese sandwich. Same goes for carrots, cauliflower, pumpkin, and beets.

    2. Any sandwich with more meat than cheese is just a grilled sandwich, not a grilled cheese sandwich.

    3. Any sandwich where the bread has been replaced by donuts, sticky buns, chocolate chip cookies, waffles, ramen, etc is not a grilled cheese sandwich.

    4. Desert and/or candy (cake batter, peeps, Nutella, chocolate, caramel, etc) do not belong in a grilled cheese sandwich. Ditto breakfast cereal.

    5. Pasta (spaghetti, pierogi, etc) between two slices of bread is not a grilled cheese sandwich.

So out of the 58 on this list, how many does that leave?

The best grilled cheese is just your favorite cheese and bread. I bought a sandwich grill a few weeks ago. I brush on some olive oil and some sour dough. Maybe a fresh tomato slice. Simple is best. Tuna melts are very good with this grill. So is my banana peanut butter Elvis sandwich.

Grilled cheese (American cheese; white bread) + Campbell's tomato soup = perfect lunch on a cold day. Of course, I like it cut on the diagonal and with crusts removed, because that's how grandma did it. I still think of the old gal when I whip this up. IMO grilled cheese is one of those comfort foods that doesn't profit from fancying up...T

Yes, white bread, some cheddar and Tomato soup is the best combo. I sometimes buy the boring classic Campbell's chicken noddle. My Mom bought the chicken noddle more then the tomato. For white bread, it needs to be Wonder bread. Wonder makes a white bread called Texas toast. Its thicker. Even toasted it makes for better soup dipping.

I'm not sure if they still have wonder in the U.S.. I only see it in Canada.

I think they have Wonder Bread here. We but the cheap stuff at Kroger since that's what the mom in law likes.

For chicken soup, I prefer to make it myself. Grandma's recipe. Sweat onions, celery, carrots in olive oil. Add water. Add spices you like. I go with a bay leaf, paprika, black pepper, parsley. Throw in a few chicken legs. Simmer. Add in rice. Simmer some more. I salt mine up at the table in the form of Tabasco...T

Homemade is the best and actually pretty easy. Grocery wise my Mom only bought things easy to make in the microwave.

Kept it simple. Tuna melt. Made with Costco frozen tuna steaks. Tomato soup. Progresso, not bad.

The bacon and onions I get but what is that sticking out of the right side of it? Tell me it isn't pork belly on top of bacon on top of beef? :)

Where are all the corned beef and cabbage pics today? Mid week holidays like this are one thing that make working nights suck. :)

Not surprising. Big, varied menu, but mostly all crap. Never, ever order a steak. Can't go wrong with the onion rings (pretty damned good, actually) and a beer though. But of course, then you have to either settle for a mediocre burger, or decide where to go for dinner afterward.
