Yesterday was just another boring day here,so i thought it would be cool to do a ramp run on my mates chassis dyno to see what HP my stock 12/91 348TB could pull. Then,i decided to drop the exhaust off the car and run straight through pipes out of the cat convertors and do another ramp run to see the horsepower increase. Here are the 1st run results with the stock 348 exhaust. 28'c ambient air tempreture in the workshop, engine at normal operating temp and car in 4th gear>>

    302.5HP at the flywheel.
    241.1HP at the wheels.

Yeah,we actually thought it would make a few more ponies on the dyno than it did, because the stock exhaust looks really restrictive with the really tight bends that it has on both top and bottom mufflers. Still good fun.

I have before and after short video clips on the dyno too,but im in the process of figuring out how to post them or the link to them. I cannot really pick the engine note difference in the clips on my computer. Maybe cause i have sh*t computer speakers and sub :p Nah,I think it is my digital camera? Either way,it is cool and ill try get them on here asap :D

    Very cool!
The sound without mufflers must be amazing!
How did it convert from rear wheel hp to flywheel hp? To me 20% seems a bit high for driveline loss.
    Again, very cool!

The engine sounds amazing at high RPM! :D At idle though,it has a slight chunky turbo car note(which i dont really like) but.........once you are cruising around it sounds great, alot louder, but really nice. I gave it some sting over a big concrete bridge we have here, with high concrete sidewalls so to speak around it and the engine note reverberating through there was soooooooooooo awesome! I love it! Sounds really really cool! :D The dyno calculates the figure from rear wheels to flywheel and the dyno figures at the rear wheels are 100% acurate. You can see the difference in the figures on both dyno printouts posted. The dyno basically "guesses" the flywheel HP figure. It made a 10HP gain at the flywheel and a 8HP gain at the wheels. :D At the rear wheels is the accurate 8HP power increase.

By memory, transaxles are very effeicent and average a 18% drivetrain loss as compared to front engined/rear wheel drive cars that have around 33% drivetrain loss. Or close too anyways :D

Nice. So did you have the single can or dual can mufflers?

I thought they all had the dual setup?? I have the top and bottom mufflers. Its a win win situation all round with them removed. The engine bay temp is around 50% cooler i reckon. There was alot of muffler/metal in the engine bay,and as you can see in the pic of just the pipes, its really opened up the area around the airbox and standing at the rear of the car on the dyno,it seemed alot cooler in that area after the dyno run with only the pipes attached. And also, both them mufflers must weigh around 15Kg each,so there is around a 30Kg weight loss the car has also saved :D. I still have both mufflers and all the clamps/bolts ect...and it would only be a 30min job to remove the pipes and refit the stock exhaust when i get pulled up by the cops.........................and it WILL happen :( hehe

Nope the later model cars when to a single can "spider" exhaust.

Pretty much what Ferrari claimed hp. '89 - '92 had 300hp. '93-'95 312hp. The difference on later cars, the spyder exhaust being less restrictive. At least on US cars.

    Great data!

Richard just a quick additional note FYI. The euro cars supposedly had 320 hp in '93-'95 because of the new exhaust and the addition of a larger intake plenun which the US(312 HP) cars didn't get. The US cars got the exhaust but not the different(larger intake) intake. Regards, Vern

My wayward friend Mark - I know there is a good engineer in him under that cheap and easy boost addiction.

Im really happy with the performance of the car stock. At the moment with the exhaust off,it seems to pull a little harder at high RPM and a few times already it has spun straight to the rev limiter quicker than it normally would have. The fantastic engine note at full noise makes you want to pin it in 1st and 2nd gear all the time!

Ah yes, but with a turbo, say goodby to that wonderful exhaust note. It will sound more like blowing your nose into a sewer pipe! :)

If it makes you feel better, Vic has started working on the heads and hopes to have news soon. I'll post whatever he finds on the other thread.

BTW, it's not and addiction...I could give up the boost any time I please... it's not a problem, who told you it was a problem?......and there is nothing cheap about having so much hp I had to add the million dollar multidisc carbon-carbon clutch to get it to the wheels :)
